I am super excited to be back in the blogosphere, sharing my latest makeover.

I am saddened that I started working on this and forgot to snap before pictures. Ugghh. I get so excited to dive into these projects, that I am midway through and realize..."snap! I forgot to take pictures!"

I did, however, catch the most important parts midway through.

What I love most about this business, is meeting new people who inevitably become friends along the way. I was introduced to my latest client at my bi-monthly MOPS (Moms of Preschoolers) meeting. Just like me, Teresa is a wife and mother to two (adorable) little boys.

We got together to discuss the boys' playroom. She has a beautiful, custom home. Nearly every room is finished, but the media room was lacking a little TLC. It was instantly apparent that Teresa has great style - a mix of traditional, and rustic with some modern touches.

The family recently moved into a new home, and there was a desk left by the previous owners. Instead of donating it to Goodwill or discarding it at the curb, she decided to repurpose it into something fab! If we could all just use our imaginations a little bit, we could save so many things from their ultimate peril.

A designer's dream client is someone that will allow you to express your ideas, and ultimately give you creative flexibility. Teresa has given me complete freedom in this project. I bounced my ideas off of her, but ultimately she trusted me to execute my plan. It makes me want to work that much harder, and go above and beyond to deliver a great product.

After searching Pinterest for some inspiration. I searched Miss Mustard Seed for some ideas for paint finishes. I loved this piece from Miss Mustard Seed. She is truly incredible. I can't wait for her new book to hit the shelves. I am sure it will be filled with plenty of eye candy.

The shelves of the desk had veneer, which was slightly damaged en route to my garage. It was fixable, but after examining the remaining drawers, I noticed they were all peeling from the wood surface. It gave me an idea. After slight peeling back the veneer, I noticed that the glue had a wonderful texture. This was an opportunity to really set this piece apart, and give it some texture.

I proceeded to peel back the veneer on each drawer, using a flat screwdriver and a hammer as a chisel. I sanded the surface with an orbital sander to remove any shards of wood, leaving as much texture as possible. You can see these events weren't necessarily in order. I painted one the drawer fronts prior to removing them, deciding only after to chip away all of the veneer.

After removing the veneer from the doors, and sanding them with the orbital, I painted the drawer fronts with a coat of Old White. Once the paint dried, I rubbed the drawer fronts with a coat of clear wax. Then, I mixed one part clear wax with one part dark wax and rubbed it into the drawer fronts to create a beautiful textured appearance.

I painted the entire desk with two coats Annie Sloan's, Old White, and waxed it before sanding to cut down on the chalk dust. I heavily distressed the edges of the desk, allowing the original wood to show through. Since this will be in the playroom of a two, busy boys, this will get a coat or two of Minwax water-based polycrylic in satin finish for added protection.

I updated the hardware - snagging this pull for the middle drawer on the clearance rack at Anthropologie for just $5 - marked down from $18 (yikes!).

The rest of the drawer pulls were purchased from Lowe's for about $3.50 each. We updated all of the hardware for less than $40! I love to mix pulls - don't think you have to go all matchy-matchy with your hardware. It will add more character to your piece.
It's only a few years old, but my tastes have changed since we moved in 5 years ago, and I am loving all of the light and airy kitchens these days. Recently, we updated our builder-beige paint to the perfect shade of warm gray. It adds a more contemporary look to what is otherwise a very traditional kitchen - dark maple cabinets and travertine backsplash.

I have wanted add some shelving to display cookbooks and my lovely china from my wedding registry. I am making a point of use my occasional dishes, otherwise, it never sees the light of day. What's the point of beautiful dishes if they are always tucked away in a cupboard?

I was inspired by these West Elm shelves and numerous posts on Pinterest, and knew that I wanted to create some open shelves out of salvaged wood. I found a local salvage yard in Austin, and made the trek with my girlfriend and the two boys on a Saturday morning.

I was able to snag the perfect piece of reclaimed wood for just a $1 a linear foot! It was perfect shade of weathered gray. I managed to get the 8-foot piece of lumber in the car, with the boys in tow. I hosed it down, scrubbed it with some Krud Kutter and let it dry in the garage for a couple days. I had to sand it pretty good with the heavy-grit sandpaper, but I didn't go crazy making sure it was perfectly smooth.

I measured my wall and had a friend make the cuts, and was able to get four, 18" shelves - perfect for my narrow wall.

Off to find my brackets.

I purchased these at Home Depot for just $6 each. I like the curved edge and the brushed nickel finish. Originally, I had intended to spray paint the brackets matte black, but I quickly changed my mind once I saw them on the wall against the gray paint. I could have chosen standard black brackets with the straight arm, but I thought the curved arm softened the industrial feel, and created a more decorative look.

I wanted to utilize the entire wall to showcase my artwork. I purchased my drawings at an estate sale for $20. They are original, and signed by the artist. I also opted to create a low shelf that would act as bookshelf for my cookbooks. I made sure to secure it with anchors in case the kiddos, pull on them. They are very sturdy.

A couple things to keep in mind when hanging your shelves. My wood had two different finishes - the underside looked like plywood, while the opposite had a beautiful rustic look. I wanted to show off the weathered wood, so I made sure that the top shelf had the weathered wood on the bottom so you can see it from the floor.

Also, when drilling the holes in your salvaged wood, make sure you pre-drill pilot holes. Weathered wood is dry and porous, and you risk splitting the wood if you don't pre-drill.

And here is the final result.
Not bad for about $15 per shelf. Sure beats the hefty $79 price tag at West Elm.
My husband introduced me to a new furniture collection. I am salivating.

The New Traditionalists have nailed it. This collection is the perfect blend of classic and traditional, with a modern twist. Many pieces have a Hollywood Regency feel, but with contemporary colors and finishes.

Here are a couple of my favorite pieces.

I don't know one man who wouldn't die to have this couch in his office or study. It's sleek and masculine, but with impeccable tailoring. And it happens to combine some feminine characteristics as well - gently sloping arms, and classic curved arm rests. This is the perfect marriage of his/hers couch.

via

And check out this credenza?! Isn't it totally gorge? Ooooohhhh la la

via

And this has to be my favorite. Look at this baby changer! How chic. I love the lipstick red drawers. That is one lucky baby, I tell ya.

I hi-lighted just a few of my faves, but I recommend looking at the entire collection because all of it is amazing, and hand- crafted in the USA.

Jamie Figari Designhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15939434175417458688noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2216999162168164619.post-44323543723434457162012-02-01T13:31:00.000-08:002012-02-01T14:25:41.038-08:00Pottery Barn Knockoff - Desk MakeoverI am so excited about my latest makeover. This beauty was originally a custom piece from the hubby's furniture line, Kanto Home. It was a custom order for this Pottery Barn knockoff . Unfortunately, it arrived in the wrong color - it was supposed to be antique white, but ended up being a stark white finish.

I don't have the original before picture, unfortunately. I started painting it, and completely forgot to snap them until midway through.

You can see from the PB website, it was a pretty simple piece, but I knew I could give it some high style with a little experimenting. I have always loved the turned leg - it's so feminine and romantic.

I was anxious to test out my new Annie Sloan Chalk Paint colors - Aubusson Blue and Paris Gray. I started painting the desk with the a watered down 50/50 mix of the two. I decided that the blue was a little too strong for the look I wanted.

After my first coat dried, I went over the desk again with the Paris Gray, diluted with a little bit of water to create a wash.

Once the paint was dry, about 2-3 hrs later, I waxed it with a coat of the AS clear wax and a cloth. I waited about 12 hours until the wax had cured, then gently distressed just the edges and the legs with a fine sanding wedge revealing the white underneath.

I had achieved the subtle blue I was going for, but I decided it could still use a little pizazz.

Enter my trusty paint can. Is there anything that doesn't benefit from a hint of sparkle?! I did the unthinkable and went over the entire desk in Krylon's Brushed champagne spray paint. After spraying the color, I immediately wiped the area with a soft cloth. This technique gave me just a subtle sheen and eliminated any overspray.

Off to Anthropologie to find some killer drawer pulls.

I decided on these little lovlies. Don't you just love the hardware at Anthropologie? It is my go-to place for really eccentric things.

I purchased four lucite drawer pulls, with a hint of gold, contrasted with coral drawer pulls for the center. The coral gives it a pop of color, and they have a hint of blue to tie everything together.

What do you think of the results? It turned out just as I had envisioned! I will finish it off with a clear coat of poly for added durability.

I think it is sophisticated enough for an adult space, but could also be the perfect complement to a tween room.

How did I do?
If you have been following my blog, you may have noticed it has been a little light on the DIY. I neglected to post my latest revamp. It was a small project, but a MUCH needed upgrade.

I have been in the process of slowly cleaning out the unnecessary clutter in preparation for the new year. Each time I think of throwing something away or passing it off to Goodwill, I ask myself the following questions:

Why am I getting rid of this item?
Will I need this in the future?
Can I update the item, and put it to use now?

If the answers to questions 2 and 3 are NO, it's off to the donation pile. But one should never underestimate the transforming power of paint.

Meet my subject.

Blaahhhh

I purchased this bookshelf from Target for Mateo's room when he was a baby. It's not exceptional quality, and the slightest nick reveals cheap particle board lurking under the espresso finish. What can I expect for $100? Once it started showing it's age, I moved it to the playroom to succumb to even more abuse.

Now, I need a shelf for Baby Luca. I have an obsession right now with lightening up every dark piece of furniture in my home. I knew I wanted to do a contrasting color for the back of the shelves and high-gloss white for the exterior. I found this perfect shade of chartreuse for the back of the bookcase - Glidden's Olive Oil. It looks a little more yellow in this picture, but in person it has a tinge of green.

The chartreuse color makes me smile. It's so bright and sunny, and coordinates perfect with the new artwork. I purchased this original mixed media print at the Goodwill auction for $15!

Look at the amazing reflective qualities of this paint. I used Glidden's Trim & Door paint in antique white. It's a little tricky to get used to, as it is a gel-based product. I highly recommend watching the tutorials, but I will definitely be using it again. Another downfall is that it took for-evahhh to dry - it wasn't hardened to the touch for at least 24 hrs. Well worth the wait in my opinion.

I'll be honest, I have never been much for establishing and sticking to New Year's resolutions. Of course, I will go through goals in my head, and tell myself I am going to improve on something. But I have never had any real accountability. Well, that is about to change right now, friends. I am about to immortalize my goals for 2012 in cyberspace history.

I am a firm believer that the most successful New Year resolutions are not just short-term goals but lifestyle changes. It would be great to drop that extra five pounds for the new year, but wouldn't you really like to keep it off forever? That doesn't happen without making serious changes to your diet and your lifestyle. Resolutions are most successful when we change our bad habits and create routines that set us up for success.

2011 was a challenging year for many of us. It wasn't my favorite. But even with all of the challenges, there was a lot to be learned, and we had our share of blessings as well. The greatest gift we received this year was Baby Luca, born just 5 days shy of my 30th birthday. I am so thankful to have two healthy boys and a wonderful husband.

Without further ado, here are my New Year's resolutions for 2012, in no particular order.

Wake Up Earlier. I am not a morning person. Never have been, and it's safe to say, I probably never will be. We tend to be late sleepers in my house. This would be fine and dandy if I was a dude, and I could hop in the shower and be ready in 15 minutes. I have had the same nighttime routine with my children since they were born. Bath - book - bed. It usually only takes an hour to complete the three, but ever since Luca was born, my 3-year-old doesn't want to sleep! AGGHHHH!!! I have tried everything, but the child refuses to stay in his room. Needless to say, it makes for very long evenings, and results in me going to bed at 12:30-1 a.m. most nights. I need that time for myself to wind down in the evenings. I am finally resulting to the one thing I haven't tried which is to put a lock on the bedroom door. If you have any tips or suggestions, I would love to hear them!

Be More Punctual It never fails. I am always 15 minutes late dropping Mateo off for school. I especially try to make an effort to be timely for other appointments, and sometimes still fail miserably. For example, I have a friend that graciously gives me pilates reformer lessons on Saturday mornings. It is such a wonderful thing she is doing for me, and the last couple times I have been 8 minutes late. It gives me anxiety, makes me feel terrible and it's soooooo not worth the added stress. For 8 measly minutes?! Puuulllleeez! I think a little more preparation and a couple of easy modifications in my routine and it make a world of difference. I know this - I just need to do it. Couldn't you easily spend all of the previous day preparing for the day ahead? I could keep my self busy just getting ready to get ready.

via Pinterest

Learn to Sew Did you know that I have access to tons of designer fabrics? I have big plans to build my Etsy store this year to add more vintage accessories, reclaimed furniture pieces and custom pillows. There is nothing like new pillows to add a pop of color or pattern in room. And they can be switched out with the season for an inexpensive update. I plan on purchasing a sewing machine in the very near future and start making some pillows. If you have any reco's for great machine, I would love to hear.

Listen Without Interrupting

Take Better Pictures We have a Canon professional camera, and I have been playing around with it lately. If the pictures turn out nice, it's luck, because I have no idea what I am doing. I take my own pictures for my blog, but what separates good blogs from great ones are the photos. I have always loved photography. This year I want to take it a step further and gain some knowledge on how to improve my abilities, snap great closeups, still-life photos and better pics of the fam.

Get in Fightin' Shape I have always been pretty much the same size. Good but not great. Like most of us, I have a fitness goal for 2012. I have never really pushed myself to be in amazing shape, probably because I have always been comfortable. Well, I am ready to push out of that comfort zone. I am surrounded by women at the gym in their 40's who look like they could kick my arse. And last year, I witnessed my husband transform himself into the best shape of his life. He dropped 10 pounds I didn't know he had to lose. He looks incredible. I owe it to him, and myself to reach this goal.

Improve My Blog and Grow my Readership I started blogging because I love to write. What started out as a hobby has turned into a passion, and I realize that the blogging community is like a family. I feel like I know the people I read about, even though we have never stepped foot in the same building. Blogging can be highly personal, and it is a little daunting to put yourself out there for the world to read. I have so much to share. I hope that you find my work inspiring and interesting, and will continue to join me on this adventure that is my life! I will be eternally grateful.
So there they are. Of course, there are even a few more, but some things you just have to keep for yourself....hehe. Have you made your resolutions? Please share!
Jamie Figari Designhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15939434175417458688noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2216999162168164619.post-22041045508515304652011-11-30T17:27:00.000-08:002011-11-30T20:45:45.782-08:00'Tis the Season........for decorating, entertaining and holiday link parties! I will be linking up the following tablescape to Centsational Girl's party for a chance to win a $100 Home Goods gift card in addition to a few others.

Here is my gold and silver palette inspired by nature. Maybe it's a sign of the times, but I am in the spirit to use what I have and truly embrace the old adage, "waste not, want not." I am proud that everything on my table, with the exception of a couple tree ornaments and the food, was already in my home.

Did anyone catch the 60 Minutes program on Sunday about the homeless families in America? It really hit home with me, and put things into perspective. This year has been challenging for so many families, and our family is no exclusion. At the end of the day, I am so thankful my little family is happy and healthy. As long as we have each other, I couldn't ask for more.

That being said, here are the goods....

I mixed gold and silver for a timeless look. The beaded China was from my wedding registry via Crate & Barrel, and I mixed it with some silver pieces inherited from my grandma's collection for a vintage look. I added some brass candle holders purchased from Goodwill...

I swapped out my host chairs for the Ikat Farmhouse Chairs from my previous post. The miniature trees were from Big Lots for $4, the mercury ball was from my bookshelf. The votives are C&B from last year.
My new friend, Samaa, at Honey Sweet Home awarded me the Liebster Blog Award. The award is designed to promote new bloggers with less than 200 followers. I am so grateful to receive the award, and happy to promote other new bloggers like myself.

I would like to dedicate this award to a fellow blogger - my father. At 68 years young, recovering from a stroke that nearly took his life, my dad traveled all the way from Michigan to Alaska on his Harley Davidson with little more than a tent, a mess kit and two-weeks worth of clothes. His journey was such an inspiration to me. If you know my father or not, you will find his blog to be funny and inspiring. Here is to you, Dad, in hopes that you will end your hiatus and get back to what you love - traveling and blogging. You truly have a gift!

It has been so incredibly gratifying to receive comments from new people who have been inspired by my work. I truly love blogging, and the sense of community that comes with it. Thanks again, Samaa, for keeping me in mind. I hope to keep posting beautiful creations and ideas for everyone to enjoy.

The rules of the award are as follows:
1. Post about the award in your blog, linking back to the person who gave it to you.
2. Award 5 new bloggers, and leave a comment telling them so.

Here are five new blogs to check out:

www.jusrexwaywardblog.blogspot.com

www.tdadecoratinganddesign.blogspot.com

www.nataliehagerinteriors.com/la-vie-en-rose/

http://nestegg.typepad.com

www.tothegathering.blogspot.com/

I FINALLY finished these lovelies.

They were a bargain deal on Craiglist. The listing read, "I crawled on these chairs as a toddler. I am now 60 years old. My mother crawled on these chairs as a little girl. She is now 80."

Man, I am such a sucker for a good anecdote.

I just couldn't pass up this set of four farmhouse chairs, only to be discarded at the nearest curb. Apparently, I was the only person who saw the potential. If there is one thing I am really good at, it's spotting a diamond in the rough.

They were in rough shape, but I bit the bullet because the chairs were solid oak with dovetail joints, and the springs were in surprisingly good condition. They stood level with no creaks. There were a couple deep cracks, and the finish was in major need of some TLC.

The upholstery had probably been replaced a couple times, most recently with the oh-so-stylish chocolate vinyl. The chairs were in desperate need of a good sanding, but I loved that remnants of the original olive paint were still visible.

I sent the photo and dimensions to a local antique dealer who verified the chairs were probably English or American farmhouse chairs, at least 60 years old.

I had never refinished anything before. Since my intention was to resell, I contacted a couple of professional refinishers for a quote to restore the chairs, and the bids range from $165-$250 per chair. Yikes! I also struggled because the quotes were to make the chairs "like new." I realized that I didn't want them to look new - the whole reason I fell in love with them was because they looked old.

I started sanding the chairs a couple hours - here and there - over a period of weeks. This was what they looked liked mid-way through. You can see the grain of the oak starting to show through, but some of the paint is still left behind.

Warning: Make sure if you are working with old furniture (1978 or prior) that you take precaution and wear a protective mask, for risk of exposure to lead-based paint.

The finish was a three step process:

First I sanded them smooth, which took many hours. I didn't attempt an electric sander - one, because I don't own one (hint hint, relatives and/or spouse) ; and two, because I wanted control over the finish.

I didn't keep track, but I would estimate at least 20 hours of sanding for all four chairs over several weeks. I used a 80 grit sandpaper to get rid of the crud and initial roughness. Once the initial layer of dirt and crud was removed, I moved to a 120-150 sanding wedge to maintain as much of the original paint as possible.

Once the chairs were completely smooth. I stained them with Minwax Wood Finish in Dark Walnut.

Finally, I diluted a 1 part Annie Sloan's Chalk Paint in Country Gray with 1 part water to create a wash of color, allowing the grain of the wood to peak through.

I can't express how amazing this paint is to work with. It is so easy to use, and is virtually impossible to screw up. I used a 200 grit, very fine sanding wedge to gently sand the paint down enough to remove the obvious brush strokes.

I was going for a updated vintage farmhouse look. Do you think I was successful?
For no more than the cost of paint, you can virtually transform a room. I love adding color to a space, but despite the infinite possibilities in the color wheel, I always resort to neutral palettes for their timeless appeal and soothing qualities.

The versatility of gray is endless. It can be modern and masculine, classic and feminine - sometimes all at once.

Not sure how to make gray work for you? One key to finding the right shade within a sea of options is to take hints from complementary colors in your space, and choose a gray with those undertones.

Gray varies greatly depending on the light. Be sure you evaluate the color throughout the day in both natural and ambient lighting. Paint the sample on each wall of your room for the best result.

If you are unsure, consult a professional to help you. It is well worth the hourly fee that most designers charge for a quick color consult to ensure you choose the right shade for your home.

Do you have any gray rooms in your home? Do you have a go-to gray that you recommend? Please do tell.

Cozy sweaters, cooler weather, tall boots and all things pumpkin. Pumpkin Spice Lattes, toasted pumpkin seeds, and of course...pumpkin bread.
This is a delicious recipe for a quick-rise bread. It doesn't contain any yeast, so the dough doesn't need to rest prior to baking. You can have a delicious dessert or snack in just over an hour.
Since Mateo is apparently "too big" for naps these days, I decided to put him to work.

This was at the expense of my kitchen of course, which looks exactly as you would suspect with a 3-year-old operating my large stand-mixer. But it's all good. He is only young once, so I am going to enjoy it, and try not to take things too seriously.

This recipe makes three small loaves.

Ingredients
4 large eggs
2 cups sugar
1 cup packed light brown sugar
1 cup canola oil
2/3 cup of evaporated milk
1 (15 oz) can pumpkin
3 1/3 cups of all-purpose flour
2 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. salt
1 Tbsp. ground cinnamon
1 tsp. ground nutmeg
1/4 cup confectioner's sugar

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Grease three 6-inch x 3-inch x 2-inch pans with non-stick spray or butter.

In a large mixing bowl, beat eggs, sugar, oil and milk. Blend in pumpkin. Combine flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt, cinnamon and nutmeg; add to pumpkin mixture and beat until combined.

Pour into pans. Bake for 45 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes clean. Cool for 15 minutes. Loosen the sides from the pan with a butter knife, and invert the pan so the bread falls out. Turn right side up and dust with confectioner's sugar.

With the addition of Luca (he is six months old today!), I can count on one hand the number of times I have prepared a meal since he was born. The result is, we eat the same things 3-4 nights a week (snooooooze). Aggh! I must get my cooking groove back. I am missing the variety in our diets. And I am pretty sure it would be more economical to raise our own chickens with the amount of poultry we have consumed in recent months.

I came across this recipe at Luca's checkup this morning in Parenting magazine, and decided to test it out for lunch. It's a 30 minute pasta by celebrity chef, Buddy Valastro, host of TLC's Cake Boss and Kitchen Boss. I never really stick to the recipes, but I must give credit where credit is due. I modified the original recipe, so following is my version.

I substituted shrimp for chicken (that is what I had in my fridge), and swapped the baby spinach for baby kale. Did you know Kale is a superfood? It's so delicious! This pasta is fail-proof, and absolutely yummy.
Ingredients:
3/4 pint cherry tomatoes
1 tsp chopped fresh garlic
1/4 cup olive oil and more to taste
1/4 cup bread crumbs
1 box of linguine (I choose the Barilla multi-grain pasta in the yellow box)
2 tbsp butter (I recommend the Presidente brand)
1 lb chicken in 1-inch cubes
1/2 cup of dry white wine
2 cups of baby kale
salt & pepper to season
fresh grated parmesan

Preheat oven to 450 degrees. In a baking dish, toss the cherry tomatoes, 1/4 cup of olive oil, 1 tsp of chopped fresh garlic. Season with salt and pepper. Roast in the oven for 10 minutes. Remove from the oven, and mix in the bread crumbs. Return to oven for 5 minutes.

In the meantime boil one box of linguine in generously salted water.

Meanwhile, heat a large saute' pan over medium heat with 2 tbsp of butter, and remaining chopped garlic. Cook the chicken until golden brown on all sides, seasoning with salt and pepper. De-glaze the pan with 1/2 cup of white wine. Bring the wine sauce to a boil and reduce the heat to a simmer for 3-4 minutes.

Add the cherry tomato mixture, drained pasta and baby kale. Toss well, and dig in! This recipe is perfect for busy families. I can attest after making it for myself, it was ready in 30 minutes - tops.
I found the paint to be very workable and forgiving, and this is coming from someone with limited experience painting furniture. I tried not to read too many reviews on the product (everyone raves about it), because I didn't want it to influence my opinions. But I have to say, I will definitely continue to use the paint, despite the hefty $35-a-pint price tag.
As you can see, one coat allows the color underneath to show through. The paint was developed to provide a great deal of versatility. According to Annie Sloan's website, the paint can be diluted with water to create a "wash" of color. The paint can also be thickened by allowing it to set overnight with the paint can opened, which will provide a textured effect.

I will provide a more detailed product review in an upcoming post, but first, I wanted to share the finished product with you. I just love how the Pottery Barn side tables turned out.

Here is a picture of one side table before.

And the end result.

The color I chose was Country Gray. It is almost a pale, pistachio green. The paint dries in a soft matte finish shown above. When you wax it (recommended), it turns slightly darker with a subtle sheen. The proprietary wax also offers versatility when distressing the furniture, while providing some protection.

I chose not to distress these side tables because I loved how pretty they were in one solid color. I am just going to let the pieces distress naturally with normal wear and tear.

I dressed these babies up with some gorgeous, vintage-inspired drawer pulls purchased at Anthropologie. They have an incredibly unique selection of hardware. It can get pretty pricey, but I was able to purchase these pulls for $8 each. They are the jewelry, after all. Since I only needed four, it was worth the extra splurge.

I also lined the drawers with some linen wrapping paper purchased from World Market for just $3 a roll. This was a huge upgrade from the standard shelf liners, and it's cheaper too!

I measured the sides and bottom of the drawer, and cut the paper to fit as shown here.

I adhered the paper to the drawers using a spray adhesive. I had Elmer's Spray Adhesive in my arsenal, but there are several different brands. It is holding up OK so far, but I think next time I will use a stronger bonding agent such as Mod Podge. If you go the spray adhesive route, make sure you lay a cloth on your surface prior to spraying. Then attach the wrapping paper to the inside of the drawers, making sure to apply enough pressure to eliminate any ripples.

So there you have it. These side tables will be right at home in my newly-painted guest room/office. I love how the room is coming along. I can't wait to have my own sanctuary to sip my morning coffee.
Hubby is in Miami for business, and I am home with two sick kiddos. I guess its Murphy’s Law—they seem to get sick every time I am home alone.
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">But I am not letting that keep me down – no ma’am. In fact, I realized how much more productive I can be when home alone. I have to keep myself busy, otherwise it feels awfully lonely in this big ‘ole house.
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">Not to mention, we had a huge thunder and lighting storm that caused a power surge in the upstairs bathroom. The kids and I were in the kitchen having dinner, when I heard a huge crash. Immediately, the smoke alarms triggered. I thought surely the painfully ear-piercing sound would send the children into frenzy. They were surprisingly calm.
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">I was certain the house was hit by lightning (I was right), and immediately tried to gather my senses and stay calm for the kids. I looked upstairs, and glanced outside for any signs of smoke, but I couldn’t see anything. I noticed the upstairs smelled like something was burning. I didn’t waste any more time, and immediately called 911 to send the fire department.
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;"> It appears the lightning struck somewhere on the roof. We are so fortunate the house did not catch fire. A nearby neighborhood was struck with a bolt of lightning that burned down the entire movie set of the Alamo, in addition to starting a fire that spread 200 acres. It is devastating the destruction we have had from wildfires the last few weeks. My heart goes out to the local families and businesses affected by the recent disasters.

Sorry for the dark picture but, there were no lights after the blowout. There was some minor damage, but overall, nothing major. Needless to say, it could have been much worse.
<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif; text-align: center;">
<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">I see more painting in my near future. I thought I would share a simple project that I did for a friend over the weekend. You can do this simple DIY project in less than 30 minutes.
<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">I went out to dinner with my in-laws and hubby at a fabulous Japanese fusion restaurant a couple months ago. Of course, Japanese cuisine would not be complete with out sake. When they delivered the frosted pink bottle to the table, my mother-in-law commented on how pretty it was - too pretty to leave at the table to ultimately end up in the trash.
<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">

I just love everything about this bottle - the cotton-candy-pink color, shape, and particularly, the artistic label. We just had to order a second bottle for each of us to take home. I thought it would make the perfect flower vase on a bedside table. I made one for my friend Lauren, and she liked it so much, she asked me to make another! Check out the end result...

<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">This planter couldn't be simpler. I started with a fuchsia Phalaenopsis orchid stem which I purchased from Michael's for about $9.99. Using heaving duty wire clippers from hubby's collection, I clipped a few inches from the orchid stem to achieve the desired height. I attached the orchid stem to a bamboo reed using some floral wire. You can trim the top of the bamboo reed so it extends a couple inches beyond the top of the orchid.
<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">One simple trick to adding some detail to a store-bought arrangement is to secure a touch of high-quality moss to the stem using some raffia. You can tie it to make a simple loop, or leave the edges frayed for a casual look. Secure the moss to the stem with a touch of hot glue.
<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">I completed to the look with a simple stem of curly willow, and voila! A simple Sake bottle planter.
<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">
It could be much worse, I guess. Everyone has the laundry list of things they need to improve on. Here are my top five in no particular order of importance.
<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">#1 Be less cluttered. I am sort of a neat freak, and my husband is the sort of self-confessed OCD type. I am what you would call a piler. In my attempts to organize my paper clutter, I create so many "organized" piles that I completely disorganize myself! Hubby is convinced we need a larger countertop, but I assured him it would just give me more space to scatter things.
<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">#2 Have more patience. In life. In general. With my family, particularly my three-year old. Enough said.
<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">#3 Laugh more and stress less. Stress is so hard on the body, and there is nothing like a good, full-belly laugh to ease that tension. At the end of the day, as long as I have my health and my family, I am a lucky gal.
<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">#4 Take more pictures. My kids are growing like weeds right in front of my eyes. I want to capture everything - the good the bad, the hysterical...that's the good stuff.
<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">#5 Don't put off until tomorrow what you can do today. This is the inspiration for my blog post. And let me tell you, there is nothing like a house full of guests to kick a sista' into high gear.
<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">My brother just informed me that he and the family - my two nieces, one nephew, and my sister-in-law - would be driving down to Austin to visit us for a few days (pause for screech of excitement). I can't wait to see my family. This also coincides with two other guests traveling from Peru. Seven house guests calls for a major organizational overhaul.
<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">My three-year-old, Mateo, has been in desperate need of a dresser for quite some time. We recently relocated Mateo's dresser/changing table to Baby Luca's room, and upgraded Mateo to a big-boy bed. Needless to say, I was in desperate need of storage.
<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">My in-laws purchased a dresser on clearance from the Pottery Barn outlet for our guest room. It was marked down to final sale because it was missing one drawer in the center. As you can see, the dresser was pretty simple. Although we tried to replace the drawer with a dummy front made of plywood, the finish never matched up. Hmmmm...sounds like a perfect guinea pig for my first attempt at refinishing furniture.
<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif; text-align: center;">
<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif; text-align: center;">Pottery Barn Dresser Before....zzzzzzz
<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">And here is the dresser after my transformation.
<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif; text-align: center;">
<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif; text-align: center;">Pottery Barn Dresser After
<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif; text-align: center;">

<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif; text-align: left;">Here is how I did it. I have been reading an incredible DIY/home decor blog from Kate, a.k.a. Centsational Girl. If you have never stumbled upon her blog, you should check it out...like immediately. She is incredible, and her DIY projects look really professional. I am extremely picky when it comes to DIY style. I love the idea of DIY projects, but I don't want it to look as if I came close, but didn't quite get there.
<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif; text-align: left;">

<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif; text-align: left;">I did some hefty research on Kate's website before attempting to tackle this project. She has run the gamut on a whole slew of household projects, and has painted just about anything you can think of. Kate also lists all of the products she uses, so I used her blog as a resource for this project. Since my in-laws purchased the dresser, I had to make it look better than before, and replace it with a better piece for the guest room. Stay tuned, because I have big plans for a replacement piece (so excite!).
<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif; text-align: left;">

<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif; text-align: left;">Because this piece of furniture is for a very energetic and spirited three-year-old, it needs to handle a beating. I decided to use an oil-based paint for its superior coverage and durability. My product of choice was Rustoleum's Smoke Gray in gloss finish. The color reminds me of an old-school locker room. It's actually more of a slate blue than gray, so it is a nice contrast to some of the more juvenile primary accents in his room.
<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif; text-align: left;">

One thing I have learned from painting, is preparation is 90 percent of the job. If you really want something to look professional, you must do the tedious prep work - take out all of the hardware, and fill the holes with a wood filler using a putty knife if you are replacing the hardware, and cover any scratches. I used Elmer's wood filler. Sand lightly over any patches to ensure a smooth finish.

<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif; text-align: left;">I prepped the furniture all over with a light scuff using medium-grit sandpaper, followed by a coat of Zinsser's Cover-Stain Primer. Note: Zinsser claims it will cover without sanding, but according to Kate, it doesn't hurt to give the primer a little something extra to adhere to. I used 120 grit sandpaper. After the primer dried, I used a foam roller to apply the paint. I immediately followed with a high-quality, 2-inch angled brush to get in the corners and smooth any drips.

Let me tell you, Texas heat is no joke. I started painting around 9 a.m, and I still had trouble with the paint bubbling while outdoors. I think next time I will lay down a drop cloth and paint inside. It was definitely challenging to apply the paint evenly before it started to dry and bubble.

Another trick I picked up from CG is to use something to prevent brushstrokes. She recommends using Floetrol for latex paint and Penetrol for oil-based paints. I actually used mineral spirits, which is basically low-odor paint thinner because I needed it to clean my paint brushes anyway. It worked OK, but I will definitely try the Penetrol next time to make a comparison. I wouldn't have been able to continue working without the mineral spirits - otherwise, the paint was getting all funky gunky.

Normally, one should do a light sanding in between coats of paint, but I skipped this step because it was removing the glossy finish, and giving the furniture a more distressed look. I actually like that look too, but I decided to go for smooth and glossy this time. I waited about 2 hours per the instructions, and applied the second coat of paint. I let this cure over nigh,t and followed it with two coats of Minwax Polycrylic in gloss finish.

The final touch was the hardware. I looked at Lowe's, and was completely underwhelmed with my hardware selection. I intended to replace the original knobs with something a little more vintage-looking, but nada. Back to the paint isle I went. There wasn't a great selection of colors, but there was quite a variety of finishes. I decided to do something metallic via Rustoleum's Bronze Metallic finish.

I am so glad I didn't replace the hardware. For the roughly $8, I spent on a can of spray paint vs. $30 plus for new hardware, I transformed the knobs. Don't you agree?

Now that Mateo's dresser is complete, I can move his CD player back into his room. I miss our dance parties. Little by little, his big-boy room is coming together. In the meantime, here is a sneak peek of his vintage-inspired room. It's never to early to start teaching him style, but I also want his room to be a reflection of all the things he loves. For the time being it's trains, cars, motorcycles, and robots - basically anything that makes noise or goes fast...surely, his father had no part in this. Coming from a racing family, and a husband with a Ducati, I am afraid I may be doomed...
These are really common questions. One thing I can say about accessorizing is that it takes practice to get it right. There really isn't a right or wrong way when it comes to design, but there are some guidelines to achieve that look that you see in the magazines.
<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">I thought I would do a series of three posts, starting with the Fireplace Mantel. First, decide if you are trying to create a look that is formal or casual. If your mantel is in a sitting room that is rarely used, perhaps you want to go with something that is a little more formal-looking. If your fireplace is located in the family room, where the kids and guests regularly congregate, you can do something a little more casual.
<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">When I think of formal fireplace arrangements, I think of symmetry. For example a large statement piece in the center such as a mirror or a large piece of artwork, flanked with candles or topiaries. I love this fireplace example from Martha Stewart. It's simple and elegant, and the greenery gives it a touch of asymmetry to an otherwise symmetrical display.
<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif; text-align: center;">
<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif; text-align: center;">

<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">Here are a couple of examples of asymmetrical fireplace mantels from REAL Simple. I love how unfussy the look becomes. Both are interesting, and the selection of objects is really artistic. If you are going for this look, be sure that your accessories have some whimsy to keep it from being too serious.
<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">I used to place everything symmetrical because I wasn't confident in creating an asymmetrical look that worked. If you practice, you will eventually be able to create a look you love without over-thinking it. Here are some general guidelines for creating a juxtaposition, or a grouping of objects.
<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<ul style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">
Group Similar Objects: When grouping objects, choose items that share the same color, shape, theme. This will create a more unified look so that it doesn't appear as clutter.

Rule of Three: There is a theory that three is the magic number when creating a small group of objects. Things tend to look better in odd numbers - for example, a single stand alone item such as a large framed artwork, or a grouping of three candles or ceramics.

Vary the Height of Objects: You can create more interest if you group objects with different heights. Pairs of objects at the same height can appear monotonous. If you have smaller objects, try to raise them on a pedestal or stand so they don't get lost.

Create Depth: Placing objects in a straight line looks static. I like to place three objects in a triangle, or place one single object next to two staggered items.

Choose a Focal Point: Try to arrange everything around one main object such as a mirror, or artwork. This will pull everything together. If you find that you have too many items, you can take away while maintaining a focal point.

Edit, Edit, Edit!: You may have to add and subtract several times before you get it right. Be selective with your accessories, and you will pull together a pleasing arrangement without looking cluttered.

<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">Oh, and one more tip, mirrors are always a popular above a fireplace mantel. A mirror is a great way to bring more light to a room, and they come in endless sizes and shapes. If you have high chimney with tall ceilings, you can play up the architecture with a large mirror.
<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">When displaying a mirror, make sure that the reflection is a pleasing one - you don't want a mirror reflecting a bare wall. Position a mirror to reflect a gorgeous chandelier, a view to the outdoors, or a pretty floral arrangement.
<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">My advice is to page through magazines, and books for inspiration and try some of the ideas out on your own. Here are a couple more that inspire me:

Today I asked her, "if you were to go on a design blog, what would you be looking for?" She answered, "furniture layout - how to make the best use of a space, and promote positive energy." This leads to the discussion of Feng Shui (pronounced Fung-Shway), and we both decided we need to Feng Shui our homes... and our lives...for that matter.
<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">Most people are vaguely familiar with this ancient Chinese study. But I wanted a dummied-down version, without all the technical jargon. I went to Barnes & Noble and purchased Feng Shui for Dummies, so I could brush up on my principles, and share with everyone the basic guidelines for decorating with Feng Shui. It doesn't get much simpler than this, folks!
<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">Before I get to decorating tips, I have to touch on the the fundamental concepts of Feng Shui: yin and yang, and the Three Realms of Influence. The ancient Chinese determined that the universe was composed of complementary energy principles - yin and yang. You probably recognize the yin-yang symbol - it looks like two fishes - one black and one white, that interconnect to form a circle.
<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">The yang is the white fish, and it represents the active side of nature - characteristics such as bright, hard, loud. In contrast, the black fish or yin, represents passivity, silence, receptiveness, darkness and inwardness. All things contain relative amounts of yin and yang energy. The ultimate goal is to achieve a balance of yin and yang energy resulting in peace and harmony.
<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">Chinese philosophers assigned three categories into which the yin and yang flowed - heaven, Earth and Human. These are recognized as the Three Realms of Influence. The philosophers studied many generations to discover how the categories could be manipulated to improve fortune, destiny and personal relationships.
<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">These principles are the essence of Feng Shui. You can achieve a harmonious environment by considering these principles when selecting the layout, color scheme and furniture for you home.
<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">Many facets of interior decorating implore the ancient philosophy of Feng Shui. You have to know the rules before you can break them!
<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">Here are some basic tips for enhancing your home with Feng Shui principles.
<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<ul style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">
In the interior of your home, the position of the bed is the most important aspect. Create a commanding position in your bedroom by facing the bed as far away from the door as possible. This asserts control over your space and your life.

The position of your master bed should allow the sleeper the largest view possible, as a diminished line of sight can reduce the sleeper's purpose and life vision.

You should be able to clearly see the bedroom door from your sleeping position; if you are lying on your back, you should be able to open your eyes, and immediately see the door without repositioning you body. Blocking the view to the door can leave the sleeper on edge.

Give careful thought to the quality of your bed, as it is the single most important piece of furniture in your home. A new bed supports positive energy and vitality. A used bed (from a previous owner), can create a lack of energy or lead to illness.

Seating positions in areas that are primarily used for socializing, such as the living room, should be conducive to conversation. Try to create seating arrangements that allow groups of two to five people to converse in one area.

Avoid placing a major piece of furniture with the back facing the doorway. Allowing guests a clear view of the doorway will make everyone feel safe and comfortable.

In a home office, the position of the desk is critical. Create a commanding position with your desk by making sure it is as far from the door as possible. This gives you more control over your space, and conveys confidence.

Do not place the desk in the direct path of the doorway, and do not to have your back against a wall of windows if possible. This can create some vulnerability, but is still acceptable.

Throughout your home, avoid furniture that dominates the space. This can make less room for you and your energy to flow; it can hold you down and can be depressing. Downsize large, heavy furniture for space saving solutions.

And lastly, cleanliness is next to godliness - a clean home provides you with clean energy to stay happy and healthy.

<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">If you have a challenging floor plan, there are many remedies to the Feng Shui principles listed that can help reverse the negative energy in your home. I recommend bringing Feng Shui principles to every room you inhabit. The result is a home that feels as good as it looks.
Jamie Figari Designhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15939434175417458688noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2216999162168164619.post-39493302160580191042011-07-14T21:08:00.000-07:002011-10-24T10:53:06.040-07:00Debut: Jamie Figari Design Custom Floral<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">I am excited to share a few of my custom floral arrangements. I started making arrangements on a fluke. I have always loved orchids, but am always disappointed by the arrangements at the department stores. Not only are they usually very artificial looking, they are severely overpriced. I would love to fill my house every week with real flower bunches, but it becomes very expensive.
<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">The first arrangement I created was a three-stem orchid planter. I found the beautiful brass bowl at a vintage store in Austin while shopping with mom. I fell in love with the bowl right away, and knew exactly what I would do with it when I got it home. The arrangement turned out so well that I started making a few more, until soon after, my house was full of flowers!
<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif; text-align: center;">
<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif; text-align: center;">

<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">I love the creative process of making floral arrangements. I can start out with one idea, but when I start putting something together, it often takes on a new direction.

I have hand-selected each flower to ensure each stem is as realistic as possible. I want people to look two or three times at the flowers to see if they are real. Another aspect that makes my arrangements truly unique is the container. I scour thrift stores and vintage shops looking for one-of-a-kind vases that can be upcycled into planters for my flowers. This orchid is perfect example of a thrift store find that has been transformed into a pretty flower pot.

<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif; text-align: left;">This is a tulip arrangement that I created for a more contemporary look. I wanted to do something a little different than what you normally would see in a store. I think this would look lovely on a nightstand in a bedroom, or up against a mirror in an entryway. The curly willow and the gray pebbles give it a fresh and modern look.
<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif; text-align: left;">
Working with a professional designer to help you select colors is one way to ensure that you won't have to paint over a mistake. If you have painted before, you understand that the prep work is one of the most tedious - albeit most important - tasks of painting. If you are on a budget, than DIY may be the way to go, but keep in mind the cost of additional materials that are needed to get the job done, such as extension rods, drop clothes, brushes and rollers. Factor these items in to the total cost of the room. In many cases, it is more cost-effective to hire a professional painter who can provide his own materials, and save you time in the process.
<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif; text-align: center;">
<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif; text-align: center;">

<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif; text-align: center;">

<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">To choose paint colors successfully, it is important to understand a few things about the basic color wheel. One of the wheel's primary functions is to illustrate the relationship between cool colors and warm colors. Cool colors such as blues, greens and violets are found on one side of the color wheel, and represent natural elements such as air and water. In contrast, warm colors such as yellows, oranges and reds, signify the connection between the earth, sun and fire. Using the color wheel can help to create harmonious palettes by pairing different shades. Keep in mind, all of these colors are greatly affected by lighting and the proximity of surrounding hues.

<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">Complementary colors - such as orange and blue - lie directly opposite one another on the color wheel. When paired with one another, each color is intensified. For the most successful use of complementary colors, it is best to use the colors in unequal proportions. For example, a steel blue room receives a needed burst of warmth when paired with bright orange accents.
<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">Analogous colors lie adjacent on the color wheel - yellow and orange, for example, or blue and purple. These colors work in harmony with one another to create a low-contrast, soothing and serene color palette. Baby blue accents will recede into the background when used to accent a violet room, while adding visual interest.
<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">Monochromatic colors are different shades of the same color. Layering different shades of green in a room from light to dark will help to create a calm and peaceful setting. When used with bold accessories, you can create a surprisingly dramatic room with just a single color.
<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">Since black and white are technically not colors - black is the absence of all color, while white is the presence of all color - they are not found on the color wheel. But that does not diminish their importance, particularly in interior design. Adding black and white to any palette is crucial to adding drama, definition and contrast. Use black and white as an accent or as the foundation to some of the most stylish palettes.
<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">Now that you have passed Color 101. It is time decide what color scheme you want for your room. Here are a few helpful hints to consider from our friends at Benjamin Moore.
<ul style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">
Where do you live? To pull together a look that is consistent with your surroundings, take your cues from your environment. A beachy theme will seem out of place in the middle of the desert, just as a Southwest theme may look inappropriate nestled in the heart of city skyscrapers. This can help you determine whether to use more saturated hues or a more muted palette.

What is the look that you are trying to convey? Are you going for a formal room or a casual retreat? Deep bronze or copper can lend a formal feel while soothing greens and yellows can offer a casual and serene environment. Of course, every color can work in a variety of contexts. The look you convey will ultimately depend on your choice of furniture and accessories.

How will the color help to create a mood for the space? It is proven that color has a direct physical impact. For example, consider green for your office as it helps to boost concentration. Blue is a popular choice for bedrooms as it lowers the heart rate and decreases blood pressure. Red can be appropriate choice for a kitchen for its appetite-boosting properties. Consider the function of the space and how the color will help to enhance it.

What is the architectural style of your home? Pay close attention to the architecture of your space. It can really speak as to which colors are most appropriate. An open air-loft, downtown loft may yearn for the industrial look of muted grays or contemporary white. In contrast, a period home may cry for a classic palette. The historical colors offered by many paint dealers are a great option for period homes.

Would you like the color to draw attention to or detract from a particular flaw or architectural detail? Theoretically, warm colors advance - thus dark colors pull the walls closer - while cool colors recede, making the space appear larger. Painting a low ceiling a light color will give it an extra lift. But these are guides - not rules. A small half bathroom with low ceilings may benefit from painting the walls and ceilings in a single deep color. This is especially true if the space lacks any architectural details such as crown moldings. Air ducts can appear less conspicuous when camouflaged the same color as the wall. Pay close attention to these details when choosing your colors.

What is the orientation of the room? Generally, cooler colors work best in south and west facing rooms. Warmer colors tend to absorb more heat, making the room uncomfortably warm in the afternoon sun. In contrast, warmer colors can bathe a north-facing room in warmth in the absence of sunlight.

What is the primary source of lighting in the room? Fluorescent lighting lacks the warm colors of the spectrum and can make warm colors appear flat. Incandescent bulbs emit a warm, yellow light so cool colors can appear dull and gray. Natural lighting is the truest, and most balanced light, so consider selecting your colors in natural light and seeing it transform into the evening when you will most likely use some form of artificial light.

What is the function of the space? Rooms primarily used in the evening such as dining rooms are popular choices for warmer tones. The incandescent lighting, commonly used in dining rooms, emits a warm glow which is flattering to faces. Likewise, vibrant colors such as bold blues or bright greens are a great choice for a children's playroom, which is used mostly throughout the day.

I recommend purchasing at least three shades of the color in question - one lighter and one darker than the original color you have chosen. Unless you are enlisting the expertise of a professional, buy the sample bottles of each shade and place the colors side by side on multiple walls of the room. Yes, most paint stores offer the larger 10 x 10 swatches that can be hung on the wall, but you will never have the true read on the color until you have painted it on the walls. The $20 extra dollars you will spend on the samples could save you hundreds in the end.
<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">Try to live with the sample colors for at least a couple days before you make a final selection. This will allow you to observe the colors in the presence of both natural and artificial lighting. This is step is critical - you will see how the color will virtually morph into another color when observed at dawn and again at dusk.
<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">
